Apple has announced the release of ColorSync 2.6, the professional color-management system that has led the publishing industry for years. The new release includes support for JPEG GIF formats as well as other improvements. According to Apple:

'Eighteen AppleScript enhancements that simplify both web and print color management by automating complex ColorSync workflow processes; support for JPEG and GIF, bringing ColorSync color consistency to the Internet's most popular image formats; updated Photoshop plug-ins that now support 16-bit images, bringing ColorSync support to high-resolution Photoshop images; easy-to-use ColorSync Control Panel that allows simple ColorSync profile and Color Management Module (CMM) selections and integration with third-party ColorSync products; an automated ColorSync monitor calibrator that speeds up the process of creating a ColorSync profile for a computer monitor; and the addition of a grayspace profile, so that the same quality ColorSync provides to color work can now be applied to grayscale images.'

Apple has also released of a new SDK for Windows Color Sync development. The new SDK will allow hardware and software developers to create ColorSync-compatible products for Windows platforms. According to Apple:

'With the introduction of the ColorSync SDK for Windows, developers can begin creating cross-platform ColorSync products, extending the technology's lead as an industry standard. The ColorSync SDK for Windows is available through Apple's developer program at www.apple.com/developer. Later this year, Apple expects to ship ColorSync 3, an enhanced version of the technology that will ship simultaneously for both the Macintosh and Windows platforms.'

ColorSync 2.6 requires MacOS 8.1 or newer and is available as a free download from Apple's web site.

Utility
For some reason, every time I download a pdf file, my computer has started trying to open it with colorsync utility. I select the file, go to file, get info and it says open with 'none'. I switch it to preview and it will open. But when I try to change all for similar documents I get the following messsage:
An error occurred while changing the application that opens 'file name' because not enough information is available. Do you want to open 'file name' with Preview? Then it gives me a choice of cancel, don't update or update.
Doesn't seem to magtter which one I choose. I can now open that file, but next time I have a pdf file, the same thing happens and I have to go to the file menu to get it to open. This started fairly recently.
I have run disk utility, repair permissions.
I have run colorsync utility verify and it says all my profiles are correct. Any idea what causes this?
Thanks
